The next phenomenal woman to join this segment is Karen Safo, @theblackvoyager .

Karen, a training Barrister, Blogger and Activist is the Founder of the Black Voyager. As a Black solo female traveler, her main focus is promoting diversity in the travel industry, by showcasing eclectic cultural stories that are undocumented and less prominent in generic travel articles/blogs. This is then intertwined with experiential resources on the benefits of sustainable travel and ethical fashion. With this then, The Black Voyager acts as a virtual passage into being unapologetically yourself in spaces that many women of color have not seen themselves in.

We took a virtual trip to London, England. And learnt the importance of self care- “Never neglect to take care of yourself.”

Here are the highlights from Karen’s takeover on our #SelfCareSaturday segment:

Firstly, set the mood with some music. My personal favorite- African Jazz music. It soothes me, relaxes me and allows me to just DREAM.


Go for a walk or Jog. I’m currently in law school and work full time which often gets difficult. We all have those days where we CAN’T. But you pick yourself up & try again. Exercise is a great stress reliever and improves your health.

My meditation includes taking some time to pray, and read my bible. SCRIPTURE OF THE DAY: Romans 8:28 “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.” This scripture grounds me. And encourages me. Everything happens for a reason.


  • 2 tablespoons of Honey
  • 1 teaspoon of Turmeric
  • 1 egg

-Mix together in a bowl & gently apply on face.

-Leave on face to completely dry.

-Wash your face with cool water & wash cloth.

-Apply suitable moisturizer.

*Optional* 2 Moringa seeds every morning. Moringa seeds have great properties such as great source of iron, regulates blood, improves sleep, lowers cholesterol, etc…

Journaling is one of the ways I tackle my anxiety. Being completely honest with myself in my writing allows me to learn & grow.

  • Karen, I thank you for remaining true to yourself. As I mentioned earlier, I’m a travel blogger. And I met with a great company & potential client recently. As the meeting progressed I began to doubt myself. I had a lot of fear about not aligning to what this client might have wanted. But I confronted myself & said “well, if they don’t like what I have to say then it’s not meant to be.”

[I’m happy to report that by sticking to who I am. I got the client. Remain true & authentic.]

  • Karen, I forgive you for not believing in yourself entirely and I know that you’ll push through. It’s just a learning process.
